Review: Matched by Allie Condie

From my personal collection
Synopsis (from Goodreads): Cassia has always trusted the Society to make the right choices for her: what to read, what to watch, what to believe. So when Xander's face appears on-screen at her Matching ceremony, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is her ideal mate . . . until she sees Ky Markham's face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.
The Society tells her it's a glitch, a rare malfunction, and that she should focus on the happy life she's destined to lead with Xander. But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.
My Thoughts: I have a problem with people who don't ever ask questions of authority. I have a problem with authority, I always have, and I always had an issue with people who take everything at face value and don't try to learn things on their own. So, I thought that I was going to have an issue with Cassia trying so hard to keep her faith in the Society and believe that everything was going to be okay. But I didn't. I thought about how hard it had been for me to decide what I was going to do with my life, where I was going to school, who I was going to spend the rest of my life with. I thought about what it would be like to have all of this decided for me in a perfect system that "never" made mistakes. And then I thought about how I would feel when that perfect system failed me and caused me to lose faith in everything that I have ever believed in. Then I understood what Cassia was going through and could relate to her and the story much better.
I thought that the story world was pretty incredible. The Match banquet was as beautiful as I expected it to be. I couldn't imagine a world where there were only 100 poems, or movies, or songs. It was such an intricate and incredible creation. Cassia was such a dynamic character. I didn't expect to like her, but I found myself getting to know her while her world was falling apart around her. She changed so much and learned so many things about herself, her family and her world that it was hard not to feel for her as you were going through this with her. I loved that Cassia's family was so supportive of her. It was really nice to see a family that was so close and loving with each other. Usually, the families are dysfunctional. Her parents also changed during the story. We got to see them going through some of the same changes that Cassia is going through. They are learning along with her about the shortcomings of the Society.
I have to admit it now, I have a thing for bad boys. I feel in love with both Jace and Will. Finnick won my heart. Daniel and Patch stole the show. But I must say that I think Ky might be one of my favorites. He is one of the strong silent bad boys and I could see immediately how Cassia could fall in love with him. He is everything that Xander is not. I loved Xander too, but there is something about Ky. I couldn't help loving him too.
The ending of the book is a great set-up for the next one. I thought some parts were a little rushed at the end, trying to wrap things up, but it was still pretty great. I love this book and I cannot wait until the second one comes out.
